International Scholarships for Women in Science Whether they are earning their degree for the first time or going back to school for a career change, women are attending college in numbers that out-number men in many academic fields. In the science fields, however, many women face the challenge of being in the minority in their classes. To better encourage women to enter and excel at these fields, a number of science grants and scholarships for women are available from private companies and individuals in the fields of biology, physical science, computer science and engineering. Biology Biologists play essential roles in our health care, zoos, conservation efforts and school settings.
Applications close each year on the 30th September.
It focuses on developing a thorough understanding of the cellular and molecular biology of human diseases, which can be applied towards better disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention by developing novel diagnostic devices, drugs and vaccines. Recently, rapid progress in molecular medicine has been achieved using new technologies such as high-throughput sequencing, bioinformatics, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and synthetic biology.
One year full time study Applications to be submitted: The application should be accompanied by: Academic transcript If required, interviews will be conducted in November Career Opportunities: Dr Natalie Whalley; ; Natalie.
Pharmacology is the science concerned with the effects of drugs on living organisms pharmacodynamics and the effect living organisms have on the absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs pharmacokinetics.
Pharmacology investigates the chemical, physiological and therapeutic effects and the mechanisms of action of drugs. The science of pharmacology is at the forefront of modern medicine.
It leads to designing, developing and testing new drugs that have the potential to alleviate and in some cases cure diseases that afflict humans and animals. Applicants should have a credit in at least one of the following biological science courses at a third year level: All BSc students with no undergraduate Pharmacology must apply for the Biosciences track, while the BHSc students with undergraduate Pharmacology will be considered for both depending on the level of undergraduate pharmacology obtained.
In a given year, the Health Sciences track will only be offered when a minimum of 5 BHSc students with undergraduate Pharmacology are accepted for Pharmacology Honours.
The Honours course in Pharmacology consists of theory of all major organ systems, specific modules and a practical research component. The course may be done over 1 or 2 years, i. Applications to be submitted by: Many career opportunities are available to a pharmacology graduate which may include: A background in pharmacology could also serve as a stepping stone for careers in law, writing and clinical sciences.
The course also teaches many other generic skills, for example, computing, written and oral communication, and data analysis techniques.
As a student in the course, you will be encouraged to employ critical thinking, to challenge scientific dogma and to ask and solve problems on your own.
On completion of the course, you will find that you are well prepared to tackle an MSc or PhD, enter a medical programme, the business environment or the health industry. Course content Each student will undertake a research project in a field of expertise of staff in the School, under close supervision by members of staff.
You may choose to do a research project with humans or animals, working in the laboratory setting or out in the field. The School also offers research opportunities in biochemistry and molecular biology. The research activities of the School are broad, covering many different aspects of physiology and biochemistry.
Principal areas of current research include cardiovascular disease, exercise physiology, fever and thermal physiology, pain, sleep, nutrition, and comparative animal physiology. Students undertake short formal courses in research methodology, microcomputing, biostatistics and data handling.
Lectures or tutorials on aspects of modern physiology are presented by lecturers in the School and also by experts from other institutions. You also will be expected to keep abreast of new biomedical developments by reading selected articles, journals or books and attending School seminars.
Entry requirements You may apply for admission if you have:The BHSc (Biomedical Sciences) degree is a three-year degree aimed at training students for a career in the medical sciences. It offers exciting opportunities in molecular medicine, physiology, applied anatomy and pharmacology.
Make A Glossary: This activity combines grammar and vocabulary skills. It can be adapted for students of any age. It can be used with any area of study including science and social studies.
The BHSc (Biomedical Sciences) degree is a three-year degree aimed at training students for a career in the medical sciences. It offers exciting opportunities in molecular medicine, physiology, applied anatomy and pharmacology. Environmental science is a growing industry, and a degree in the field gives graduates a better foot in the door to the growing list of jobs and careers that are becoming available.
You’ve heard the warnings – don’t eat poppy seeds before taking a drug test. The seeds can trigger a false positive reading for opioids, making your potential employer think you could be a heroin addict.
