The two most relevant reasons that organizations have a difficult time managing emotions is the confusion between emotions and moods, and how to handle the differences between positive and negative emotions.

The ability to handle positive emotions can be just as difficult as handling negative emotions. The first step in being able to handle emotions in the work place is being able to define the difference between positive and negative emotions. Smiling, laughing, and increase volume in speech are all physical mannerisms attributed to positive emotions.

Negative emotions can manifest themselves in many different ways for individual people. One of the keys to managing emotions in the work place is being able to identify positive and negative emotions and how individuals act when they are feeling these different emotions. Another key for the effective management of emotions is being able to differentiate the difference between emotions and moods.

Moods and emotions are similar but also different when dealing with potential diverse outcomes. The feelings a person has after an event are usually emotions based and will cause an emotional behavioral response.

This issue is common place in the fire service. There have been many times that I have been on a call or incident that has made me feel strong emotions of anger and sadness.

When I get back to the fire house I still have those emotions and when my co-workers ask me how the incident was, I am verbally negative and my behavior is different. The emotions I felt from a certain incident affects my mood.

Ineffective managers will not be able to differentiate between moods and emotions and will not be able to pin point the emotional event that caused the persons mood. Showing emotions within an organization and the work place can be positive if the organization can focus on the difference between moods and emotions along with positive and negative emotions.

The strategic use of emotions is not a rare occurrence, many people cover their true emotions or exaggerate certain emotions in order to achieve or gain something they want. Just like physical strength, intelligence, and respect are required for most jobs every job involves emotional labor.

The benefits of staying emotionally neutral is very evident is the public safety field, such as police, fire, and emergency medical services. Public safety employees are available to the community to effectively and efficiently help citizens.

The ability to stay calm under stress and make great decisions under pressure is vital for public safety employees. While on an incident if a public safety employee showed emotion it has a very strong possibility of making the situation worse and causing many more problems.What factors do you think make some organizations ineffective at managing emotions?

There are quite a few factors that could lead to ineffective emotional management. Some can be unquantifiable while others can be pointed at directly as the root cause. From reading this chapter one thing that I think makes a pretty logical conclusion is the case for emotional intelligence.
